This barn survived the widening of St. Rt. 161 through Licking County last year. It now sits abandoned, on its own island, a reference to what was. Surrounding farmland lays awkwardly segregated and vulnerable in the wake of progress.
Especially ironic is the advertising message painted on the barn, no longer seen by passing traffic. Mail Pouch Barns, once a familiar site throughout the Midwest, are becoming extinct. The graphic logo became a POP ART symbol from the era of hand painted signs. To learn about the most prolific barn painter in history, click here.
